The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) interprets EU law to make sure it is applied in the same way in all EU countries, and settles legal disputes between national governments and EU institutions.. It can also, in certain circumstances, be used by individuals, companies or organisations to take action against an EU institution, if they feel it has somehow infringed their rights. Civil Society Facility. The Civil Society Facility (CSF) was established in to support the development of civil society financially. It includes both national and multi-beneficiary initiatives which are programmed in a coordinated manner to achieve shared outcomes. The CSF consists of three strands: support for national and local civic.

The definition of civil society was not an issue of debate; it was rather a free-floating signifier with positive connotations. On closer scrutiny it becomes apparent that the notion of civil society was associated with slightly different meanings. Nevertheless, nobody questioned the legitimacy of including civil society in EU affairs and no one. The ‘Répertoire de jurisprudence' (Digest of European Union case-law) is a compilation of summaries of the judgments and orders of the Court of Justice and General Court of the European Union and of the European Union Civil Service Tribunal delivered since their inception, following a classification scheme. The Court of Justice of the European Union has exclusive jurisdiction over European Union law and holds a broad interpretation of these powers. This, however, may come into conflict with the jurisdiction of other international courts and tribunals, especially in the context of so-called mixed agreements. While the CJEU considers these 'integral parts' of EU law, other international courts will.

The European Commission can also take a case against an EU state to the General Court. These cases ask the court to decide whether the member state is in breach of its obligations to the EU. In some narrow cases, such as a state being a repeat offender and where it has failed to implement an EU directive, the court can fine a member state. The European Court of Human Rights has issued numerous rulings upholding the principle that freedom of speech also protects ideas that might be shocking or disturbing to society. The Court of Justice of the European Union (which sometimes is also referred to as the European Court of Justice), constitutes the highest judicial authority of the EU. It ensures, in cooperation with the courts and tribunals of the Member States, the application and uniform interpretation of European Union law.
